Liquid Marijuana

Liquid marijuana
, nasty as the name may sound, does not contain any trace of cannabis. In fact, it is a fruity drink that will probably get you a second look from somebody not familiar with it. The name comes from its green coloring, owing from the combination of the blue curacao and the yellow of the pineapple juice. It can be a bit cloudy, especially if the pineapple juice is not strained prior to adding to the cocktail. Despite its name, though, this cocktail has lower alcohol than its cocktail contingents. However, do not be fooled - imbibing on this cocktail can get you a DUI if you’re not careful.

Know Your Ingredients!

Here are some of the ingredients mentioned here that you would like to know of:

  • Midori. A melon-flavored liqueur from Japan until 1987 when it was no longer exclusively made there after almost a century. Temper the alcohol content in your cocktail mix with this low alcohol ingredient.
  • Spiced rum. Add character to your drinks with the spiced rum. While it is not a liquor particularly loved by bar goes, it can add the needed kick to your cocktails and shots.
  • Schnapps. Not to be mistaken with liqueurs because of its fruity flavor, schnapps are made by fermenting fruit juices along with the base liquor. Liqueur, on the other hand, is made simply letting a fruit or fruit peel of choice to steep in vodka, tequila, rum or other liquors. Blue curacao is an example of a liqueur.
  • Coconut rum. Let your alcohol glide down with the sweetness of this rum. Don’t let the sweetness fool you, though, it can be fairly potent with the 70 proof mark.
  • Sweet and sour. A simple syrup made from combining lemon and lime juice with water and sugar, this gives a refreshing taste to your cocktails. Check out the recipe here.

Bar Accessories

  • Collins glass. A tall glass worth 6-8 oz of booze
  • Shot glass. These are the most conspicuous glasses on the bar with usually a capacity of 1-2 ounces.
  • Shaker. Give your drinks a nice cold shake with this
  • Short glass. Usually served for “on the rocks” kind of drinks, these usually have thicker bases that it’s ordinary shattered.

The Rise in Fame

Liquid Marijuana cocktail and shots are in the USA and Canada. In the US it is popular in the states of Mississippi, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Alabama and Arkansas while in Canada, the drink is  Ontario.

It is easy to give a negative connotation to the name of this cocktail and shot. There are unscrupulous individuals who produce the real liquid marijuana (read, cannabis), bottle it and sell in the market. Individuals were already apprehended due to trafficking of liquid cannabis. It is also known that liquid cannabis is used in vapes.

However, on the good side of the story, liquid marijuana (claimed to be without cannabis) cocktails and shots are making raves in bars in Tahlequah, Oklahoma City.

The Perfect Pair

When pairing food to cocktails or shots, always consider the main alcoholic ingredient. In cases where they are added in equal parts, consider the most dominant to the taste buds. Here are some dishes that goes well with liquid marijuana cocktails and shots.

Tequila-based drinks are best paired with dishes that has pork, chicken and raw seafood. Surprisingly, chocolate pairs well with tequila-based drinks as it tempers the bitter taste of the tequila.  Check out restaurants like the CUCINAurbana that serve awesome tequila and food pairings. Some of the most recommended dishes that pair well with tequila-based drinks are Flaming Hot Cheese, popcorn, ceviche, Jalapeño Poppers, and nachos.

For rum-based drinks, banana foster laced with rum works well. The peanut butter in chicken satay pairs well with the rum, making it a good dish to go with Liquid Marijuana. Other suggestions are pineapple upside down cake, shrimp ceviche and fried chicken.
