Well, maybe not that futile but sometimes it can be frustrating how one product can try and save the world while another is created to wreck even bigger havoc. Not to be discouraged, though, since every person who decides to be an environmental warrior deserves a treat for their efforts.

    Best Reusable Straws Buying Guide

Safety is the top requirement when finding the best reusable straw for you and your family, especially if you have younger kids around. Read through the description instead of relying on images so you know what you’re getting into. Don’t forget to read the customers’ reviews but don’t believe everything you read also. Some customers do not read through the product description then post a negative comment when the product came out not according to their expectations. That’s counterproductive to the seller and the customers who might have enjoyed the product.

    Materials

There are five reusable drinking straws you can choose from when buying one for you and your family.

    • Stainless Steel

Stainless steel straws are the most common reusable straws in the market since they are fairly less expensive than most reusable straws, easy to carry around, and easy to clean. The downside of these straws includes potential danger to kids, chipped or cracked teeth, sensitivity to extreme temperatures, and a bad aftertaste.

    • Silicone

Silicone straws are a better alternative to these reusable straws in the market because they have the least issue on safety, toxicity, and sustainability.

    • Bamboo

Bamboo is another great alternative to reusable straws but because of the work needed to make them, they are a bit more expensive than metal straws. Extra care is needed also to keep them from damage and bacteria.

    • Titanium

These are the most expensive on this lot since titanium is an expensive metal but the price is outweighed by the benefits - no scalded tongue and lips since titanium doesn’t conduct the heat as effectively as stainless steel, less stress on the teeth and does not have metallic taste usually observed in stainless steel straws.

    • Glass

Glass straws are fragile as expected but they are easier to monitor if there is anything funny happening inside the straw that is not visible in other straw alternatives. Also, since they are more straightforward, they are easier to clean and no hidden crevices are left unclean. Care is needed to keep your straws for longer.

    Purpose

What do you expect to do with your reusable straw? If you are a frequent customer of milk tea, smoothies, and pearl shakes, you may want a bigger straw. For you lovers of pearl shake and boba milk tea, here’s a boba kit you don’t want to miss - zero plastic and trendy to carry around.

    Size

Straws come in standard 8.5” to extra-long 10.5”. When choosing to buy one, choose something that will fit your current tumbler (the straw hole and how tall is the tumbler). Choose also the right diameter before buying. You may want to use it only for your juices and soda but end up getting a boba straw.

    Other Features

Other features you might want to consider is the design. Do you prefer a straight or slightly bent straw? Do you want a carrying case that you can use to transport your straw? Just how portable do you want? If using a metal straw and your teeth are a bit sensitive, does it have features like a silicone tip or a slightly rounded tip?

    Reusable Straws FAQs

    1. Are reusable straws sanitary?

While reusable straws do help in the issue of pollution and the number of disposable plastic straws that end up in the ocean, it does not really solve the issue of sanitation. For one, reusable straws are narrow and long, making cleaning it, even in the dishwasher inefficient. Unless you have the proper tools, that is.

So, to make it more sanitary, here are a few tips.

    • Rinse immediately after each use. Run a cleaning brush through its length and rinse it well under running water. Repeat a few times until the water comes clean.
    • Dry it thoroughly before storing it, especially silicone straws which are mold magnets. Telescoping straws are no better since it’s easy for some traces of milk, fruit pulp, and other ingredients caught in between the parts.
    • Use mild detergent and rinse well under running water.

    2. How do restaurants clean metal straws?

Respectable restaurants go out of their way to clean and sanitize their metal straws since they wouldn’t want to lose a star rating because of funny-smelling and moldy straws They usually follow these protocols:

    • Rinsing. The first step that should be done is to rinse the metal straws in a tub of clean water to remove some of the pulp, milk, and other drink residues in the straw.
    • Soaking and cleaning. After rinsing, washers usually dump the metal straws in a separate tub filled with soapy water. They wash it with a cleaning brush to remove any residue that may cause a funny odor on the metal straws.
    • Washing in the dishwasher. This is an optional step if the straws are too many to clean by hand. Be sure most of the residue from the drinks were removed in the rinsing and soaking process. Just pile them up in the flatware bin as you would the spoons, forks, etc.
    • Sanitizing. Sanitize the straws in the same restaurant-approved sanitizing formula such as usually used for other flatware.

If you feel gross having to use metal straws used by other people, you are always allowed to bring your own.

    3. Are silicone straws toxic?

Silicone straws are probably the best alternative when it comes to reusable straws as long as they are made by reputable companies. Look for one with a third-party certification that the straws are free from BPA, BPS, phthalate, lead, cadmium, mercury, PBBs, and other carcinogenic materials.

Silicone can be a mold magnet. Be sure to wash them immediately and dry them well. Washing can be a challenge because of the floppy feature of silicone straws but rather than risk drinking metal or broken glass in your drinks, silicone is the better alternative. On its own, silicone straws are not toxic.

They are also recyclable so that’s one way to put it on the upper rung of reusable straws ladder. Silicone straws are a lot safer for children to use too so you don’t have a problem of poking injuries even when they run around.

    4. Why are metal straws bad for your teeth?

Sensitive teeth are especially prone to injuries from metal straws. Since they are better temperature conductors than other straw alternatives, the teeth (and gums) may be more prone to injuries. Straws are not supposed to be used for hot drinks as it may scald the lips and the tongue, though many still practice the use of straw for hot drinks.  Toothaches and chipped teeth are also common to those using stainless steel straws.

    5. Are bamboo straws better?

At first glance, bamboo straws are a better alternative to plastic straws. It does have its merits. For one, they’re biodegradable and made from sustainable materials. Bamboo is also known for its antibacterial properties and bamboo straws are easy to clean. However, care should be given to bamboo straws when cleaning them since it can become waterlogged and break apart if left in the water for so long. They can also cause poking accidents to younger kids so they are not the best option if you have kids at home.

    Conclusion

Single-use or even reusable plastic straws are out because of the environmental problems that it had been causing for years. Reusable straws are the trend now, especially for environmental warriors. Straws in general, however, may pose health concerns as listed in this news article. While there are very plausible reasons to use a straw, they are not really that necessary. So unless you love wrinkles on your face, you may have to reconsider using a straw when drinking water. Love cocktails? Try these variations of Tequila Sunrise and have a valid excuse to show off your reusable straws.
