The name draft is a commonly used North American term, while other countries like Australia or Ireland called it draught from the Old English word “Dragan,” which meant to carry or pull. They’re a popular item used in sitcoms and movies, often seen with teenagers or young college students.
How a Draft Beer System Works
Cooler
The recommended cooling temperature for beer is 3 degrees celsius. The cooling process begins when you store the keg in a cool and dark place if you pair it with an energy-efficient hydrocarbon cooler.
Keg
This is the container that holds the beer. They come in various shapes and sizes, but the most common thing is the down tube that pumps gas and helps the beer up to the tap.
Coupler
This connects the tube to the keg safely. It provides a secure passage for the gas to push through and help pump the beer without causing a mess or explosion.
Gas
CO2 gas is used to pump and regulate beer. To get a constant flow of beer, it has to maintain a pressure of 40 psi; any more would result in fobbing beer. This is when the beer has absorbed some of the CO2, which results in diminished quality.
Tubing
This is used to transport beer from the keg to your red solo cup. It’s important to have thick insulated tubing to keep the beer cool.
Font
This is controlled by the free flow tap. The tap needs to be in good condition and must be opened smoothly. If not opened properly, too much foam may be served in the glass instead of the drink.
