Professional bartenders prefer the wooden muddler over the metal version for many reasons. This is because wooden muddlers are much lighter and more comfortable to use than metal muddlers which are heavier and feel cold to the touch.

Muddler Comparison: Which is Better?

Tall vs. Short.  Since it can reach the top of the glass with no issues, a tall muddler has an advantage over short muddlers. But if you often travel for your job, short muddlers are easier to pack and carry. The size of your muddler can depend on what kind of job you’re doing, but overall tall muddlers are preferred.

Flat vs. Textured. Both have their advantages when it comes to pressing ingredients. Flat muddlers can gently press leaves enough to extract oils and flavor without destroying them for presentation. Textured muddlers are great for thicker ingredients such as fruits and vegetables.

Lacquered vs. Natural. While varnished wood may look aesthetically pleasing, washing them can cause the lacquer to be stripped off, which may not be food-safe. Natural or unvarnished wood may be difficult to maintain, but at least you don’t have to worry about toxins leaching into your drinks.

Things You Need to Know About Wooden Muddlers

Porous. Wood is known to be porous, meaning it can absorb odor, moisture and is prone to staining over time. Muddlers are exposed to all kinds of ingredients that could destroy the material. It’s important to properly wash your muddlers to avoid the absorbed material from rotting within.

Handwash. While it’s tempting to slap your used muddler into the dishwasher, the heat and pressure may cause more damage and destroy it. Wash it on the sink with a sponge and soap, and dry it out with a towel. Remember to let it completely dry before storing it.

Muddler wax. This is a food-safe wood wax that you can use as a protective coating for your muddler. It protects your muddler from moisture by filling out the pores and holds the color of your wood.
