I bought this mat to cover the floor in front of my washer & dryer, since I was sick of having wet clothes fall onto my dirty basement floor when transferring them to the dryer. It works exactly as it should. Also, I live in a very old house in a high water table area on a street with poor storm drainage, so if (when) we get water in the basement, I can take this outside, scrub it with cleanser, and hose it off. Finally, it does indeed smell strongly of rubber. That's because *it's rubber* and …rubber smells.
