Your Night Out Breakfast Shot

Usually known as the Irish Pancake Breakfast Shot, this shot of Irish Whiskey and butterscotch schnapps paired with a shot of orange juice and a bite of bacon is a good way to end your day. Why it was called Irish breakfast is beyond us since it does not have anything Irish. Well, except for the whiskey. The makers of this claim that only Irish whiskey does the trick for this shooter. Apparently, Irish whiskey is different from other whiskeys because it was made from unmalted barley and has been distilled three times. The regular whiskey uses malted (sprouted) barley and undergoes a single distillation process.

The Rise in Fame

On the worldwide trend, breakfast snack shot is popular in the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. In the US alone, it has a good following in the states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, North Carolina and Virginia.

A North Carolina newspaper featured a couple of Irish whiskey aficionados who mentioned the uniqueness of Irish whiskey and why they prefer it over other whiskeys. The news article also featured some recipes using Irish whiskey such as breakfast shot.

A Peek into History

While whiskey is usually made from corn, barley is abundant in Ireland. When the distillation started in the 12th century, the British rulers of Ireland imposed taxes on barley. To make ends meet, the makers decided to use unmalted (unsprouted) but the resulting spirit is too strong so it has to be distilled thrice, resulting in a light and honeyed spirit. The history of the breakfast shot, though, is unknown and it might just have been due to an innovative bartender’s attempt to make something new. Next time he heard it, it was the new “in” thing. No one bothered with patents on bar drinks, I suppose.

The Perfect Pair

The breakfast shot pairs very well with Hawaiian Barbeque Pizza . The tangy but sweet taste of the pineapple combined with the salty ham complements well with the shot. If you want something that’s on the heavier side without so much as the carbs, try the Rack of Lamb with Mint Pesto packed with protein and good fats and the fresh taste of mint removes the aftertaste of lamb. Filet of Beef is also a good choice for packing in protein. Enjoy dipping your chips, pita bread, crackers or even veggie sticks with Blue Cheese Dip or Smoked Salmon Spread . For some sweet dipping, you can choose the Dark Chocolate Coconut Fondue to dip your bite-sized fruits, pretzels or celery sticks.
