Collection: BEER MUGS & STEINS
Beer steins and mugs are vessels for serving beer. We can say that they are a type of beer glasses, but steins date back from the 14th century, while beer glasses are from the 17th century. On the other hand, beer mugs were first created in the 19th century, with ten sides, also known as handled pint mugs or lantern tankards.
Kinds of Beer Mugs
Like beer steins, beer mugs are also made from different materials other than glass which is most known today. A beer mug is a type of beer glass and is close relative to beer steins minus the lid.
- Clay beer mugs. Clay beer mugs are one of the oldest models of beer mugs.
- Wood beer mugs. Compared to clay, wood is more widely used. However, drinking from wood mugs creates a reaction between the beer and the mug. Eventually, the wood will also release a flavor that affects the taste and aroma of the beer, making the drinker quickly drunk.
- Stainless beer mugs. Stainless steel beer mugs are the best way to keep your brew refreshing and cold. They resist stains, taste nothing like it would be compromised by environmental factors such as odor or temperature changeover time—which can ruin a great sip you've been waiting for!
- Glass beer mugs. Glass beer mugs are now the norm when drinking beer. They are durable, easy to clean, do not react to the beer, and are designed to keep the beer cooler.
Beer Steins
Beer steins are available in shopping malls and online shops. However, not every beer stein is as valuable as those manufactured from its birthplace, Germany. Aside from that, there are other factors to determine the value of your beer steins.
- Flat lids. Flat covers are made of pewter and are easy to engrave.
- Ornamental. This type of lid is the most famous among beer steins. They are conical but are detailed in design.
- Stoneware. This stein lid is stone, held in place by pewter fittings.
- Pewter fittings. This lid is characterized by a dome-shaped cover with figures engraved on it.
- Regimental. Stein lids of this type are engraved with individual military experiences of the owners.
- Mettlach. Mettlach is the most prestigious lid and probably one of the most valuable types.
5. Marked by the manufacturer. Labels can be easily fabricated. However, marks on beer steins are hard to fake. They were marked with “Made from Germany,” “Germany,” and “Western Germany.” These marks are handwritten, sticker labels are laid before baking the material, and the words are pressed into the wet clay.
If you are looking for a gift idea for the beer lover in your life, consider one of these steins or mugs. Which is right for them? That depends on what they like to drink and how often they enjoy it. If you have questions, feel free to reach out! We would be glad to help!
