Purple Hooter Shot Recipe

Purple Hooter Shot Recipe

It’s not everyday that you see a gorgeous purple drink, so when you come across one, you have to appreciate its beauty. But, looks are not the only thing that’ll satisfy you, a more important thing matters which is, of course, the taste.

Most cocktails use orange liqueur, mix in some strawberries, and perhaps some citrus fruits, the likes of lemon and lime. If you have had enough of these, you ought to try something new, some raspberries perhaps. What better way to start this venture than to have a nice glass of purple hooter.

A purple hooter is a shot made from raspberry liqueur and mixed with an orange liqueur, vodka and lime juice. Some may omit the orange liqueur and replace it with a sweet and sour mix and lemon lime soda. It is also referred to as a Raspberry Gimlet

There are a number of ways to make this shot but the typical ones involve a combination or all of the aforementioned ingredients. It can also be made as a cocktail since it deserves to be savored as well.

The sourness dances around the taste buds and brings a hint of sweetness. Before we get going with the recipe, let’s delve into its history first, shall we? It’s quite unclear though and seemingly contains no evidence, but it’s as good as it  gets.

It started in the African jungle, specifically in the Southern tip of the Congo where the Booray town proudly bears the title of the premier producer of the first-class raspberries in Africa. Aside from the people who inhabited there, the Congo was also the home of a massive group of Gorillas.

The people weren’t so confident in cohabitating with these gorillas and so, the townspeople had to find a way to defend themselves from the gorillas who apparently liked the precious raspberries. One man found out through his research that gorillas can’t stand the sound of a hooting horn and so he blew and blew until the gorillas avoided them.

The townspeople labeled the man as the “purple hooter” due to his relentless blowing of the horn that made his face all purple, and in his honor, they made a drink made of raspberries and other ingredients.

Whether or not the story behind it is real or what variation you choose to make, it can’t be denied that this concoction is a great one and worth sharing.

7. Purple Hooter Jello Shot

This recipe requires extra work but it’ll all be worth it in the end. You recall that the purple hooter calls for raspberry liqueur and lime juice, right? Because this recipe is actually a layered jello shot with colors of purple and green to honor the two mentioned ingredients. And yes, the vodka isn’t left out because it’s basically the flavor foundation.

However, if you want to stick with just the purple-colored shot, you definitely can. You just have to leave out the green portion, mix the components of the purple hooter shot, add the vodka and fill up the whole cup with the purple mixture. But, if you ever change your mind, check out this recipe!

Ingredients:

Purple layer:

Green layer:

Preparation:

1st Green layer:

  1. Lay out the jello cups on a cookie sheet to prevent them from moving when you’re filling the cups.
  2. Put 1 package of lime jello mix into a mixing bowl. Meanwhile, bring the water to a boil.
  3. Combine 1 cup of boiling water with the lime jello mix. Mix until fully dissolved.
  4. Add the ¼ cup of vodka, 2 tbsp of lime juice and 2 tbsp. Of cold water into the jello mix. You can adjust the measurements depending on how much alcohol you want in it, as long as the ratio measures 1 cup.
  5. Pour the jello mix into the cups ⅓ of the way. Don’t overfill so the layers will be equal in portion.
  6. Cover with the lids and let them cool in the refrigerator until they are set, about 2 - 4 hours.

Purple layer:

  1. Bring the water to a boil, then combine it with the purple jello mix in a mixing bowl.
  2. Mix until fully dissolved. Then, add in ½ cup of raspberry liqueur, ¼ cup water and ¼ cup lime juice.
  3. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature for 20 minutes. This step is crucial because when you pour a hot purple layer over the green layer, the green layer will just melt and the layers won’t form.
  4. Once cooled, pour the purple mixture over the green layer, reaching ⅔ of the cup.
  5. Cover them with the lids again and let them set in the refrigerator for another 2 - 4 hours.

2nd Green Layer:

  1. Do the same steps of the  first green layer until the 4th step. When these are done, allow the mixture to cool for about 20 minutes so as to not ruin the previous layers.
  2. When it is already cooled, pour the mixture into the cups filling the last ⅓ portion.
  3. Let them set for another 2-4 hours until firm. When they’re ready, take them out of the refrigerator and enjoy!

FAQs

What is Chambord?
It is a purple-colored  liqueur made from black raspberries that has a deep flavor, making it an ideal ingredient in cocktails. It is 16.5% Alcohol by Volume (ABV) and is 33 proof. Its origin traces to Loire Valley, France and the Chambord brand was founded in 1982. Its exact components are red and black raspberries, Madagascar vanilla, Moroccan citrus peel, honey, and Cognac, resulting in a sweet, lush and rich flavor, ideal in mixing with other spirits. Chambord is one of the most luxurious liqueurs there is so it can be a bit pricey. But it is off-set with its high end quality.

Is a purple hooter a kamikaze?
Not really, both are distinct shots that are unique in their own ways. Though, it can’t be denied that they have similar components such as the vodka and lime juice as well as the triple sec when you use that particular recipe. But, the thing about drinks is that they are the same until you incorporate a differing factor, in this case, an ingredient that can make the drink entirely different and thus a new thing.

Does Chambord need to be refrigerated?
No, it can be stored at room temperature and can still last for a long time. Since it contains more alcohol, its shelf life is longer. Just store it in a cool dry area away from direct heat or sunlight and keep tightly closed when not in use.

How much alcohol content is in a purple hooter shot?
The main ingredients of the purple hooter are vodka and Chambord. If an 80-proof vodka is used, plus the Chambord, this will result in 24 percent ABV (48 proof).

What does a purple hooter taste like?
Because it has raspberry in it and lime juice, the shot tastes both sweet and sour that gives off a fruity flavor but with a hint of bitterness and toughness from the voddka. If you consume it as a shot rather than a cocktail, you will experience the burst of these flavors all at one and will definitely leave an aftertaste.

Purple Overload and Fruity Vodkas

Purple is a pretty color, thus it can easily catch the attention of many. The list above is only a portion of the purple drinks because they are mostly shots. There are more drinks and cocktails that can be associated with this color and you can find them right here

Conclusion

It is without a doubt that purple is a cool and a tantalizing color. And if you’re going to associate it with food, you can’t deny that most of them are sophisticated such as wine, grapes, berries and more. Some are even available in this color even if it’s not their normal color, making them quite unique and more valuable such as the purple cabbage, carrots, yam and cauliflower.

Of course, the world of drinks is not exempt since it also boasts its numerous gorgeous purple drinks. One of which is the purple hooter.  It’s not only awesome based on its appearance alone but if you drink it and taste the burst of flavors, you’ll understand why it is a widely appreciated drink.
