Jägermeister (/ˈjeɪɡərˌmaɪstər/, pronounced as YAY-gər-my-stər is a popular German digestif made up of 56 herbs and spices with 35% alcohol volume. Its iconic, square-shouldered bottle has been around for more than 80 years and is easily recognizable in bars and clubs worldwide.
Over the years, Jägermeister has quickly become part of popular culture, having been featured in a number of memorable movies and television shows such as “The Hangover” and “How I Met Your Mother”. Now, there are even more reasons to enjoy a bottle of Jäger with the upcoming release of its Premium version.
The Jägermeister recipe was created by a German wine trader, Curt Mast in 1934. The name Jägermeister, translated in English means “Master Hunter”. This was not surprising since Mast, its creator, was a spirits enthusiast who was passionate about hunting and gamekeeping as well. In fact, the term Jägermeister was already being used to refer to gamekeepers in Germany long before the drink was launched in 1935. Till now, Mast-Jägermeister SE, is still owned and operated by the Mast-Findel family.
Jägermeister was first introduced to the US by Sidney Frank, an American who ran a liquor import business. Frank marketed the drink to cater to the student and youth market, effectively securing its reputation as a popular party drink. A stark contrast to the Jägermeister’s more conservative native market.
Now, after nearly 80 years, Mast-Jägermeister SE, has released a much-awaited premium version of the drink, which is called Manifest-Jägermeister.
Manifest is just like the original Jägermeister but better. It has been dubbed as the “world’s first super-premium herbal liquor.” It is based on the Jäger’s original ingredients of 56 herbs and spices but infused with more botanicals.
Another important feature that differentiates it from the original Jägermeister is Manifest’s longer maturation process in small and large oak barrels. The result is a softer, earthy flavor from the added ingredients of herbs, blossoms, and fruits.
If you can’t get enough of the Jäger, then the Manifest’s mix of spicy, fruity, vanilla, and oak extracts, will please you even more. Manifest also has a slightly higher alcohol volume of 38% and comes in the same iconic square-shaped bottle Jägermeister is famous for.
Drinks You Can Make with a Jäger
Aside from being part of pop culture, there is another reason Jägermeister is popular the world over. It’s unique and rich flavor is perfect whether served straight or combined with other spirits.
Fancy a dark, intense twist to the classic orange juice? Why not try Jäger with the refreshing taste of citrus? Combine 4 cl of Jägermeister over a glass filled with crushed ice. Pour freshly squeezed orange juice and garnish with an orange zest twist.
Martini and Jägeirmeister? Yes, please. A Meistertini is your fiery version of the classic martini. Combine Jägeirmeister with Sweet Vermouth, Maple syrup, and Espresso shots into an iced stirring glass. Strain into a martini glass. Relax and chill.
Can’t wait to get a hold of the Manifest? Unfortunately, here in the US, we have to wait a little more. Currently, it is only available in the UK and Germany, as well as in some European countries like Austria, France, Hungary, and Sweden.
