4 Best Drinks that will Dazzle Your Date | Advanced Mixology

Ah, the first date. A night full of awkward pauses, small talk, and anxiety. "Is she having a good time?" "Do I have food on my face?" "Should I tell him about my Russian doll collection?" "What's the best Date Drink?"

There are few things that alleviate awkwardness and stress better than alcohol. Why not make it part of the date? Show off your inner mixologist with these drinks that are sure to impress, and get the conversation flowing.

For Her

You want the special woman in your life to feel special and sophisticated. Tequila and orange juice is not going to do that. Here are a couple of drinks that have just the right amount of sophistication and aren't too difficult to make.

1. Tom Collins

A more sophisticated gin and soda, the Tom Collins is a classic for a reason. The recipe calls for equal parts gin and soda water, with a splash of lemon juice and a dash of simple syrup. The floral tones in the gin combine perfectly with the lemon juice for a refreshing, light "lemonade" flavour. When you're mixing this drink for the lovely lady in your life, the garnish is key. Use thin slices of lemon and a sprig of rosemary for the finishing touch.

2. Sidecar

This one is also a classic, but with a touch of mystery. Made from 3 parts Cognac, 2 parts Triple Sec (we recommend Cointreau), and 1 part fresh lemon juice, the smokiness from the Cognac combines with the citrus juices to create an intriguing cocktail. Mix the Cognac, Triple Sec and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker, shake vigorously and serve in a martini glass. To garnish this concoction, use a lemon wedge to wet the rim of the glass and dip it in raw sugar. Add a thin ribbon-cut orange peel and a maraschino cherry.

For Him

Most men are content to grab a light beer, sit on the couch, and eat takeout. Here are a couple of drinks for a special occasion or if you're just feeling fancy!

1. Mint Julep

Your man appreciates being pampered, but he still wants to feel like a man. The Mint Julep is the perfect combination of both. Grab your muddler and go to town on 5-6 large mint leaves and a splash of simple syrup. This releases the oils in the mint leaves, giving the drink its signature flavor. Add your fella's favorite bourbon (about 2.5 ozs) and some crushed ice. As the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby, the Mint Julep is normally served in a pewter cup with a handle, allowing the drink to stay cool. If you don't have a pewter cup lying around, our copper mugs are an excellent alternative! and make for a great date drink.

2. Old Fashioned

A reliable choice for a true gentleman. The Old Fashioned is a drink that will never go out of style. It all starts with a sugar cube (or if you don't have one handy a dash of loose sugar). Angostura bitters - a mysterious formula, said to contain over 40 ingredients - are the next ingredient. 3 dashes of bitters and a splash of club soda should be added to the sugar and then mixed and crushed with a muddler. Add a large ice cube and about 2oz (but who's counting?) of rye whiskey to the mixture and your Old Fashioned is complete.
